I think it may be unlikely that I’m the one to bring you the news that the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III takes place this month. Whatever your feelings towards the monarchy I hope that you will agree that this is a historic moment.
Many years ago I was commissioned by a friend of the then Prince of Wales to create a model of Highgrove as a birthday gift. This was fairly early on in my career, but with permission I was allowed to publish this picture of the model in an article in Country Life Magazine. That piece led to a succession of very interesting projects and I’ve always been grateful for the interest it brought.
Over 25 years later I’m still making models. They range from ordinary terraced houses to palaces and castles. To me the fundamental idea is to capture the detail of any type of building and reveal more than just the design of the structure. Seeing a building in miniature makes people look at it far more closely than perhaps they would look at the real house itself. I am always fascinated by this strange contradiction!
